The Quickest Way to Become an RCFE Administrator

Becoming an RCFE administrator might seem like a daunting process between filling out the application to finding RCFE continuing education classes. However, there are three basic steps you can follow to get on track to your new position caring for the elderly.

1. Complete Training

Start by finding an accredited RCFE administrator training program. If you already have some training, such as certification as a nurse, you do not need as many hours, but most candidates need to take 80 hours of classes. Some of these can be taken online, though at least 60 of these hours need to be attended live. Start with basic training and add on RCFE continuing education classes that you think will be relevant.

2. Pass the Exam

Once you have completed training, immediately contact the Department of Social Services to take your department-administered exam. You’ll need to take it within 60 days of completing classwork. Score at least 70% and you’ll be ready to start your application.

3. Submit Your Application

The RCFE administrator application involves at least five items:

  1. A copy of the completion certificate from your training
  2. The results of your exam
  3. A completed application form
  4. A background check
  5. The required application fee

If you have to apply for an extension, you’ll need to include a copy of your extension approval, and if you have other training, such as an RN license or GH administration license, you’ll need to offer proof of that as well. Send this whole packet to the Administrator Certification Section of the DSS. If everything is correct, you can expect to receive notice within 45 days, but you can check the status of your application on the DSS website.

There are many pieces to put together before you can be certified as an RCFE administrator. By staying organized and making sure you understand the application requirements beforehand, you can avoid making mistakes that might keep you from your new career.
